Who buys sexual services? The public debate about sex work is often about so-called “johns”, i.e. male clients. There is no talk about the fact that women also buy sexual services. Why? Because female sexuality is often kept secret anyway? Because it is classified as “harmless” in contrast to the “threatening” male sexuality?
The fact that women buy sex causes confusion especially among those who want to abolish sex work as the root of all evil in patriarchy. When women also buy sex, the perpetrator-victim logic doesn’t work; women are no longer just victims of aggressive male sexuality.
Women have an active, vibrant sexuality and are more and more self-aware of what and how they like it. Going to sex workers can be part of this liberation!
The “Reporter” from WDR stopped by and Svenja Kellershohn accompanied me on an afternoon with one of my regular female clients. A heartfelt and open-minded feature about why women buy sex, what makes it special, societal prejudices against sex work, and the hurdles women and queer people face in living their sex life. And about the liberating power of a de-tabooed approach to sexuality.
